Imran Khan Arrested Again After Toshakhana Case Verdict
Imran Khan Arrested After
Islamabad Trial Court Declares Him Guilty in Toshakhana Case
Pakistani politician Imran Khan, the Chairman of
the PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) party, was arrested by Punjab police from
his residence in Lahore following a trial court's verdict of "corrupt
practices" in the Toshakhana case. The court sentenced Imran to three
years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs100,000 for concealing details of gifts
received through Toshakhana. His lawyers were not present during the hearing.
The court's verdict stated that Imran provided
false statements and declarations regarding assets acquired through gifts from
Toshakhana. He was found guilty of corrupt practices by intentionally hiding
benefits from the national exchequer. The PTI leader's arrest came after the
judge expressed displeasure over the absence of his lawyers, giving multiple
chances for their appearance.
Unlike previous instances, Imran was taken into
custody without any major resistance, and the PTI confirmed that he did not
resist arrest. The party claimed that the Lahore police arrived to arrest him
even before the written verdict was released, alleging that the entire process
was illegal.
The Toshakhana case, filed by ruling party
lawmakers, was based on a complaint by the Election Commission of Pakistan
(ECP). It accused Imran of concealing details of gifts received during his
tenure as the prime minister and proceeds from their reported sales. Imran
faced several legal issues over the retention of gifts, leading to his
disqualification by the ECP.
Despite the verdict, Imran's lawyer expressed
disappointment, calling it "a murder of justice," and other PTI
leaders criticized the decision as biased and unjust.
The case against Imran, related to the Toshakhana
issue, has been ongoing for a while, and the recent verdict by the trial court
led to his arrest. The situation has implications for the PTI party's future
and raised concerns over justice and accountability in the country's political
landscape.
Imran Khan, the Chairman of Pakistan
Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was arrested by Punjab police from his residence in Lahore
after an Islamabad trial court found him guilty of "corrupt
practices" in the Toshakhana case. Toshakhana refers to a repository where
gifts presented to government officials by foreign dignitaries are kept.
The court sentenced Imran Khan to three years in
prison and imposed a fine of Rs100,000 on him for concealing details of gifts
received through Toshakhana during his tenure as the Prime Minister of
Pakistan. Notably, Imran was absent from the court during the hearing, and his
lawyers were also not present to defend him.
The judge in the case, Additional District and
Sessions Judge Humayun Dilawar, stated that the evidence provided by the
Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was convincing and well-corroborated,
proving that Imran Khan had committed corrupt practices by making false
statements about his assets acquired through Toshakhana gifts and their
disposal during specific years.
The court order further mentioned that Imran had
also provided an incorrect declaration in the Form-B, a statement of assets and
liabilities, submitted to the ECP for a particular year.
Despite the verdict, Imran's lawyer, Barrister
Gohar Khan, expressed disappointment, stating that he hadn't seen such
injustice before. PTI leader Asad Umar criticized the decision, asserting that
it does not meet the basic principle of justice being seen, and meaningful
decisions about politicians are made in the hearts of the people, not just the
courts.
The Toshakhana case was based on a criminal
complaint filed by the ECP after it concluded that Imran Khan had made false
statements and incorrect declarations regarding the gifts he had received from
foreign dignitaries during his time as Prime Minister. The case has been
ongoing, and Imran's disqualification was also related to this issue.
Imran's arrest occurred without significant
resistance, unlike previous instances. The PTI claimed that the Lahore police
arrived to arrest him even before the written verdict of the trial court was
released, alleging that the process was illegal.
The situation has implications for the PTI party,
as several PTI leaders left the party following Imran's previous arrest,
resulting in a mass exodus and uncertainty about the party's future. The case
and its outcome have raised concerns over justice and accountability in
Pakistan's political landscape.
