Imran Khan's Readiness to Spend Life in Prison
Amidst Poor Conditions: Lawyer's Claims
In
a recent development, Imran Khan, the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf
(PTI), has reportedly expressed his willingness to endure a life sentence
behind bars, according to his lawyer, Naeem Haider Panjotha. This revelation
comes amidst claims that Khan is being subjected to inadequate conditions
during his imprisonment in Attock jail.
Panjotha
stated that Imran Khan has been provided C-class facilities, yet the conditions
in the jail are far from satisfactory. The cell in which the PTI chairman is
lodged has been described as infested with flies and bugs, highlighting the
alleged poor maintenance of the facility.
During
a meeting on Monday, Panjotha disclosed that Imran Khan remains determined to
face any outcome of his legal battles and is prepared to spend the rest of his
life incarcerated. This statement comes in the wake of Khan's arrest on August
5, following a conviction by a district and sessions court in the federal
capital on charges of corrupt practices related to state gift depository.
Notably,
Khan's conviction has sparked controversy, as he vehemently denies the
allegations of misdeclaration of assets. Judge Humayun Dilawar delivered the
verdict, sentencing Khan to three years in prison along with a fine of PKR
100,000. An immediate arrest warrant was also issued in connection with the
conviction.
Subsequently,
Khan was transferred to Attock jail. Panjotha further shared that Khan has been
confined to a small room with an open washroom, indicating the reported
substandard conditions he is enduring.
Addressing
the circumstances of his arrest, Khan reportedly informed his lawyer that he
was not shown a warrant at the time of his apprehension. Additionally, the
police allegedly attempted to forcefully enter the room of his wife, Bushra
Bibi.
The
legal proceedings are far from over, as Khan's legal team intends to file an
appeal against the trial court verdict. The PTI chief has also signed a power
of attorney in preparation for the upcoming legal actions.
In
a recent move, PTI petitioned the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to transfer Imran
Khan from Attock Jail to Adiala Jail. The petition argued that Khan's
educational background, habits, social and political status, and even his past
as a graduate of Oxford University and captain of Pakistan's national cricket
team warranted better facilities than he is currently receiving.
